WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao government regrets the judgment of the American government about the effort the country is making in the fight against human trafficking. Yesterday Washington placed Curaçao a step lower on the classification list in the Trafficking in Persons report 2022.
For three years, Curaçao was in a place that indicated that the country could do better, but also tried to do better, the so-called Tier 2 Watchlist status. As of yesterday, Curaçao is on Tier 3. This status means that Curaçao does not meet the minimum standards, but also does not make significant efforts to meet them.
In a response, Justice Minister Hato says that he does not recognize himself in the relegation to Tier 3, because the government is making enormous efforts to tackle human trafficking.
For example, various training sessions, meetings and awareness campaigns were conducted to combat human trafficking. The minister did not respond to specific points raised in the TIP report.
