Curaçao government requests parliament's support to significantly increase benefits and pensions

Local | By Correspondent June 23, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Minister Ruthmilda Larmonie-Cecilia has asked the parliament for support in increasing benefits and allowances for individuals who rely solely on a parenting pension as their source of income by thirty percent.

"This proposal arises from the severe labor and poverty situation in Curaçao," the minister emphasized during her presentation to the Parliament.

Poorest

Compared to other islands in the Kingdom, Curaçao is the poorest. The island is facing an aging population, which is reflected in the labor market. Despite a decrease in unemployment from nineteen to thirteen percent in 2020, the figures remain concerning. Nearly sixty percent of the working population earns less than three thousand guilders per month, and 42 percent receive the minimum wage or even less.

Given this reality and the rising cost of living, it is widely recognized that the current amount received by those dependent on benefits or pensions as their sole source of income is insufficient.

Increase

Minister Larmonie-Cecilia, responsible for Social Affairs, Labor, and Welfare, aims to implement this increase within the legal framework in the coming months, pending necessary legislative changes.

During her presentation to the Parliament, the minister received predominantly understanding and support for her request. According to her, it is now up to the Parliament to officially endorse the proposal.
