Curaçao man smuggles drugs to Belgium to pay off corona debts

Local | By Correspondent August 11, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - A 49-year-old Curaçao man risks 36 months in prison in Belgium for smuggling cocaine. The forty-something was arrested at Zaventem airport on May 20 with several pellets of packaged cocaine in his body.

The man had flown to Brussels from Curaçao at the end of May. Upon his arrival, customs subjected him to a urine test and when it turned out to be positive, the man immediately confessed that he had swallowed these pellets.

In the end it turned out to be 70 pellets, good for a total weight of 870 grams of cocaine. The man told the police that he would receive 2,500 euros for the transport, but did not provide any further information about his clients.

The man lives in Curaçao with his mother, together with his three children. He worked as an independent painter in construction but lost his income due to the corona crisis and has built up 16,000 guilders euros in debt. With this transport he hoped to pay most of it off.

Ruling is tomorrow, August 12.
