Curaçao Medical Center celebrates World Children's Cancer Day

Local | By Correspondent February 15, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) will pay attention to International Childhood Cancer Day on Tuesday. This day is specially designed for children affected by this disease. Activities are being held all over the world to draw extra attention to the disease and its control.

The most common cancer in children is leukemia. This is also known as blood cancer. In leukemia, the bone marrow makes too many white blood cells. As a result, they can no longer protect the body against bacteria and viruses. Yet more than ninety percent of young patients recover from leukemia.

Our children are very important to us. We take good care of them at the Curaçao Medical Center,” said Meindert Manshande, pediatrician.

On the CMC's Facebook page, the hospital says that five to six children a year are admitted with cancer. To fight cancer, the patients often receive chemotherapy, on average the treatment takes about a year and a half.
