Curaçao Suns defeated by Venezuelan champions in Serie del Caribe 2024

Local | By Correspondent February 9, 2024

MIAMI - In an intense showdown in the Serie del Caribe 2024, last night saw the Curaçao Suns facing off against the Tiburones de la Guaira, the seven-time champions from Venezuela, vying for a spot in the final of one of the world's most prestigious baseball tournaments.

Despite the Curaçao Suns, participating for the second time and brimming with talent, entering with high expectations, it was the Venezuelan team that left the field with a 6-2 victory, bringing an end to the remarkable journey of the Curaçaoan team in the tournament.

The Suns, playing with nearly the same team that had defeated Puerto Rico in the previous round, took an early lead thanks to hits from Roger Bernadina and Jurickson Profar. Despite the excellent start and the support of the field players, Nelmerson Angela, the replacement for starting pitcher Juan Carlos Sulbaran, initially kept the Venezuelan batters in check.

However, after the second run, scored by Adémar Riaela, Curaçao failed to convert their 11 hits into more runs.

On the other hand, Tiburones de la Guaira demonstrated efficiency by turning 7 hits into 6 runs, emphasizing the difference between the teams. This showcased the Venezuelans' status as a 'very good' team compared to the 'good' performance of the Curaçao Suns.

Despite the defeat, there is still hope for the Curaçao Suns. Wladimir Balentien, a Suns player, was selected for the tournament's 'all-star team' as a right fielder, acknowledging his outstanding performances.

Furthermore, the Suns still have a chance to showcase their strength in the battle for the third place against the champion of Panama. This match, scheduled for tonight at 16:00 local time in Curaçao, promises to be an exciting conclusion to the tournament for the Curaçaoan team.
