Curaçao to introduce new ID card to improve travel and digital security

Local | By Correspondent January 5, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao is set to introduce a new national identification card designed to make travel within the Kingdom of the Netherlands easier while significantly improving digital security. This was revealed in the recently published 2025 performance report of the Ministry of Governance, Planning and Public Service.

The new sédula will be equipped with advanced cybersecurity features and will be accepted as an alternative to a passport for travel within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. According to the government, the upgraded document aims to meet modern international security standards while expanding the practical use of the ID card for residents.

Government officials note that the current sédula, introduced in 2021, already marked an important step forward in modernizing identification documents on the island. For the first time, the Curaçao coat of arms and a machine-readable zone were added, making the ID suitable as a travel document within the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. Since 2022, residents have been able to use the card to travel between Curaçao, Sint Maarten and the BES islands.

With the introduction of the new sédula, the government intends to build on these developments by further strengthening digital protection against fraud and identity theft, while also improving compatibility with evolving security requirements across the Kingdom.

The Ministry of Governance, Planning and Public Service states that the updated ID card reflects Curaçao’s broader efforts to modernize public services and enhance the safety, mobility and convenience of its citizens. Further details on the rollout and implementation of the new sédula are expected to be announced at a later stage.
