Curaçao’s monument care organization celebrates anniversary

Local | By Correspondent April 8, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - Stichting Monumentenzorg Curaçao (SMZ) celebrated recently its 65th anniversary. An indispensable organization that has made a major contribution to the restoration of monuments; not only physically, but also about the awareness of the importance and splendor of monumental buildings.

The foundation is closely involved in the development of downtown Willemstad and has made efforts to secure a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List for the island’s capital as a whole. "The four districts of Willemstad: Punda, Otrobanda, Scharloo and Pietermaai are the historic attractions for tourists from all over the world," says SMZ.

After 65 years, the job is not finished yet and the work continues: "The focus for the coming period will be on the combination of living and working in historic buildings," said director Marcel Dennert.

The foundation strives to increase public awareness and interest in the urban heritage of historic Willemstad and elsewhere on the island. SMZ expresses the importance of broad social support, among other things in its motto "Tua Res Agitur" (it is a matter that concerns you).
