D66 asks questions about sargassum in the Caribbean Netherlands

Local | By Correspondent May 31, 2019

THE HAGUE - The large amount of sargassum in the Caribbean Netherlands must also be taken seriously by the government in The Hague. D66 has asked questions about this to Minister Carola Schouten of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and to Undersecretary Stientje van Veldhoven of Infrastructure and Water Management.

The problem is particularly large on Bonaire, but the type of algae has also been found a lot on and around Curaçao.

Large quantities of sargassum were washed up in March at Sint Joris and Playa Kanoa, among others. The seaweed causes foul odor and can also be toxic when decomposing.
