Decision on expiring corona loans Caribbean countries in October

Local | By Correspondent July 1, 2021

THE HAGUE - In October, the Kingdom Council of Ministers will discuss what will happen to the 'corona loans' provided to Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten when the term ends on April 10, 2022.

Underecretary Raymond Knops announced this in response to questions from Member of Parliament Jorien Wuite (D66) during a so-called legislative consultation on the Kingdom Relations budget. She wanted to know whether the loans - now risen to 1 billion euros, with hundreds more to be added in the coming months - will be refinanced or forgiven.

Knops said he had already received the same questions from the Caribbean. He stated that he could not say anything about it yet because he did not want to prejudge the decision-making in the Kingdom Council of Ministers. That discussion will be partly determined by the speed with which the economies of the Caribbean countries are recovering.
