Local | By Correspondent December 18, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - The driver who caused a fatal accident in the De Savaan neighborhood last year has been sentenced to 12 months in prison. The case was heard by the judge on Wednesday. It is about the tragic accident that took place around 7 a.m. on August 16, 2019. A woman crossing Helmin Magno Wiels Boulevard with her son in her arms was hit by a car. That happened near Betesda.

Both the mother and the one-year-old baby did not survive the collision. The accident caused a lot of commotion at the time. According to witnesses, the 41-year-old driver drove too fast and also went through a red light.

However, the driver denied this to the judge on Wednesday. He insists that he did not drive fast. He would also have driven through orange and not through red. The driver's children, who were in the car at the time of the accident, also made a statement. But the public prosecutor has indicated that he will not include this in his demand.

In the first place, because it concerns underage children. In addition, according to the officer, it appears that the children have been instructed on what to say. The story the children told was confused and often contradictory.

In addition to the twelve months in prison, the Public Prosecution Service also wants the driver to be banned from driving a car for two years.

The judge will rule on January 13, 2021.
