WILLEMSTAD - A small group of demonstrators held a demonstration against the Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) last Saturday during the traditional arrival of Saint Nicholas. This group of people say they gather to resist “the colonial figure of Saint Nicholas”.
The demonstration is an initiative of Kòrsou kontra rasismo (Curaçao against racism), an organization supported by Kick Out Zwarte Piet. According to organizers, Saturday's action is intended as a silent protest.
Sinterklaas was welcomed on Curaçao by about a thousand parents with children.
