WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao businessman Timo Brouwer was released early yesterday, according to sources. He was allowed to go home with a monitoring ankle bracelet. Brouwer has been sentenced to three years in prison for lewd and lascivious behavior with a minor over a period of three years. One year of the sentence has been conditional. He was convicted on December 13 last year. Within the prison, there has been an angry reaction to the decision.
According to some prisoners and lawyers, the judicial system is guilty of employing a double standard. It was recently announced that a prisoner named Francillon was told by the judge three weeks ago that he can go home with an ankle bracelet. Francillon has paid 50,000 guilders bail and handed in his passport and has been waiting for an ankle bracelet for three weeks since then.
