Do not deduct sales tax paid on import

Local | By Correspondent October 2, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - The option to set off the sales tax paid at import against the sales tax declared in the tax return will be eliminated. This is stated in a bill intended to finance the fiscal corona support measures in the context of the temporary Solidarity Package. That would yield 28.5 million guilders but will have a negative effect on the cash flow of companies.

"An exemption in order to safeguard the liquidity position of business owners is possibly too far-reaching in the current economic situation," writes Legislation and Legal Affairs (WJZ) in a recent advice to the government.

Despite the advice of WJZ, the Council of Ministers agreed earlier this month to the presentation of the bill to amend the National Ordinance on sales tax to the Social and Economic Council (SER). It is unknown when the measure will be introduced.
