Documentary and debate on problematic debts (press release)

Local | By Correspondent May 31, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - Kòrsou Transparente and CoWorld - CoWorking Community Curaçao are organizing a documentary and debate evening on problematic debts in The Triangle in Otrobanda on Tuesday 4 June from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm.

"More and more citizens on Curaçao are having to deal with problematic debts," explains Michael Hernandez, chairman of Kòrsou Transparente. According to Hernandez, this means that they are no longer able to meet their monthly financial obligations. "Anyone who has to deal with problematic debts for a longer period of time has an increased chance of violating integrity standards and is vulnerable to corruption." Reason for the Kòrsou Transparente foundation to call attention to this topic and to organize this evening in collaboration with CoWorld.

Debtors, creditors and other stakeholders such as employers, lenders, debt collectors, social and legal service providers - are looking for measures to limit the damage that these debt problems cause. “The purpose of this evening is to think together about strategies for preventing and combating problematic debts in Curaçao. What are possible actions that we as a society can take?” summarizes integrity and corruption expert Nelly Schotborgh.

The debate evening will consist of an introduction and documentary followed by a panel discussion. The documentary highlights the versatility of the problem of problematic debts.

The panel consists of various stakeholders, including Ersilia De Lannoy (Deputy Director Financial Stability and market conduct supervison of the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten), Daniel Hodge (General Director at PSBbank NV) and Chantall Faneyte-Regales (Manager of Psychosocial Section) Care). The panel discussion is led by journalist Jo-Anne Bakhuis-Da Costa Gomez. The documentary is in Dutch and the working language of the panel discussion is Dutch and Papiamentu (mix and match).

Furdy's Mi Kushina provides healthy snacks to order. There are still a few places available, admission is free. You can register via www.tinyurl.com/docu-debat-depts.
