WILLEMSTAD - The number of burglaries in Curaçao decreased sharply in 2020. Both home and business burglaries and car burglaries.
In 2019 there were 1,646 burglaries, in 2020 the number fell to 775. A decrease of 53 percent.
The number of domestic burglaries, for example, decreased from 665 in 2019 to 292 last year. A decrease of 56 percent. The decline started as early as January, so a direct link with COVID is unlikely. Although the decline in the early months of the lockdown was spectacular.
The number of company burglaries also decreased, even if it was a bit less compared to homes. Overall, there is nothing to be seen from covid impact.
Car break-ins
The number of car burglaries has also fallen. From 733 in 2019 to 283 last year. A decrease of more than 60 percent.
In this category, there is a connection with the corona measures. The decline starts in March and lasts all year round. According to the police, the drastic decrease in car burglaries has to do with the fact that there have been fewer tourists on the island with a rental car, but also because there have been fewer events and activities. Criminals often target this to break into cars. Tourists are seen as an easy target.
