Dutch becomes language of instruction at four Curaçao schools

Local | By Correspondent April 4, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The Roman Catholic Central School Board (RKCS) wants more schools in Curaçao to give Dutch-language lessons. Four schools in Foundation Education (FO) will make the switch to fully Dutch next year.

Groups five to eight have been receiving Dutch-language instructions for some time, but this will now also apply to groups one to four. These are Saint Margaretha School, Saint Francis School, Santa Famia and Maria Auxiliadora School.

In this way, the RKCS hopes to improve the transition to secondary education. The children's command of the Dutch language is often not yet sufficient for the transition to secondary school, where Dutch is the language of instruction.

The RCKS has 27 primary schools. Eighteen of these are already learning to read and write in Dutch in groups one to four. One school had already switched to fully Dutch speaking. Next year there will therefore be five Dutch-language schools.
