Local | By Correspondent January 13, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - The Council of State from the Netherlands has met in Curaçao with various representatives of authorities from the judicial chain of the Caribbean islands.

These include the Attorney General, the acting Chief of Police, the Director of the Security Service, the Commander of the Navy, also Director of the Caribbean Coast Guard, the Acting Director of SDKK Prison, the Head of the National Investigation Department, and the President and Administrative Secretary of the Joint Court of Justice.

The purpose of this meeting was to exchange knowledge and experience between the judicial partners and to inform the representatives of the Council of State about improvements that can be made to strengthen law enforcement in Curaçao and the other Caribbean countries and islands of the Kingdom.

The advisory department of the Council of State advises on new bills and has independent authority to advise the government and parliament in the Netherlands on issues that play a role in society, including those that concern the rest of the Kingdom.

Court President Mauritsz de Kort: “The Council of State plays an important advisory role in the drafting of legislation. It is therefore important that we from the Caribbean islands tell them where our strengths lie, but also what we encounter.”

As an example, De Kort gave the gaps that arise as a result of insufficient investment in prosecution, prison, probation, and also in prevention to prevent crime. “It is important that the entire judicial chain receives attention in order to improve the safety of our society.”
