Local | By Correspondent August 24, 2022

CARTAGENA - A couple from the Netherlands died in Colombia earlier this week, possibly from food poisoning. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the victims are a 31-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, both from Amsterdam.

A spokesperson said local authorities believe food poisoning is the cause, but this is still under investigation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has contact with the next of kin and provides them with consular assistance. After the investigation, the bodies are brought to the Netherlands.

The two Dutch tourists arrived on Saturday in the tourist port of Cartagena. They stayed in the old center and got severe stomach pains on Monday. In the evening they were taken to a clinic where the woman and the man died several hours apart.

Colombian media write that the cause of death is not yet known. An attending physician says the two had high blood pressure, upset stomach and were in some sort of shock and said the cause of death is a matter for the police.
