Dutch emergency aid in Haiti is progressing well

Local | By Correspondent August 27, 2021

PORT-AU-PRINCE - Navy ship Zr.Ms. Holland has so far carried out several operations in Haiti. The ship left for the island on Friday, which was badly hit by an earthquake on August 22. More than 2100 people have been killed and hundreds are still missing.

Defense mainly provides assistance with transport and reconnaissance actions for aid agencies. In addition, the ship is loaded with 23,200 liters of water in bottles, food and relief supplies, which are distributed to the local population.

On board are an NH90 helicopter, fast craft and a team of at least 22 extra soldiers. The NH-90 has been conducting reconnaissance in recent days in search of a suitable site for an emergency hospital. “There is an enormous need for good medical care in the affected areas,” said spokesman Stefan de Haan. The emergency hospital will be built in the town of Aquin.

In addition, the Netherlands is helping to install a water purification plant. The installation is set up by French firefighters, the Dutch naval ship sails the firefighters to the location.

Many roads are currently impassable and unsafe. “There are several criminal gangs active on the island. We are therefore taking extra precautions for everyone's safety," emphasizes De Haan.

The plan is that the Zr.Ms. Holland offers two weeks of emergency aid in Haiti. This can be extended if necessary.
