Dutch Government Acknowledges Communication Failures With Caribbean Islands

Local | By Correspondent December 15, 2025

THE HAGUE – The Dutch government has acknowledged that communication with Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire regarding escalating tensions in the Caribbean has not been sufficient, following criticism from multiple Members of Parliament during a recent debate on regional security.

Several MPs stated that residents of the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom have been left uncertain and anxious as U.S. military operations intensify near Venezuelan waters. Lawmakers emphasized that people on the islands often rely on international media rather than official briefings to understand developments that may directly affect their safety.

Minister of Foreign Affairs David van Weel admitted during the debate that the government “could have communicated more proactively,” particularly toward local governments and parliaments in the Caribbean. He said steps are now being taken to improve coordination and information-sharing, including more frequent consultations with island leaders.

Members of Parliament stressed that the geographical proximity of Curaçao and its neighboring islands to Venezuela makes timely communication essential. Several MPs warned that a lack of clarity could lead to panic, misinformation and economic instability, especially in tourism-dependent societies.

The minister pledged that the Kingdom would work toward clearer and more consistent messaging, especially if tensions continue to rise or if security conditions deteriorate further.
