Dutch Government Advances Economic Strategies for Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius

Local | By Correspondent December 12, 2025

THE HAGUE – The Dutch government reports significant progress in strengthening the economic self-reliance of Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius, as outlined in a new parliamentary update on the development agenda for the Caribbean Netherlands. The update follows earlier commitments made in 2023 and 2024 and highlights a series of reforms aimed at long-term economic stability.

A key milestone is the development of island-specific economic strategies, expected in spring 2026. Supported by the Economisch Bureau Amsterdam, each island is mapping its most urgent economic challenges and opportunities. Bonaire is conducting its own independent process through the “Vishon 2050” commission.

The Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics is also working to accelerate economic data reporting, responding to repeated requests for earlier GDP estimates to support policymaking. Results of this feasibility study are expected mid-2026.

Progress has been uneven, the report notes, but the overall direction is clear: improved access to finance, stronger infrastructure, and better alignment between education and labor demand are essential pillars for economic self-reliance.

The Dutch government emphasizes that future success depends on stable governance and sustained cooperation between local island governments and The Hague. More detailed updates are promised in early 2026.
