Dutch Lawmakers Warn of Migration Pressure on Curaçao if Venezuela Remains Unstable

Local | By Correspondent January 9, 2026

THE HAGUE – Several members of the Dutch Parliament have warned that prolonged instability in Venezuela could lead to renewed migration pressure on Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire. During the January 8 debate, MPs stressed that the islands are often the first to feel the effects of political and economic turmoil in Venezuela.

Concerns were raised about the capacity of island governments to handle a potential increase in undocumented migrants, as well as the social and economic strain this could place on local communities. MPs urged the cabinet to ensure that island authorities have sufficient mandate and resources to respond quickly.

Minister Van Weel confirmed that migration scenarios are part of the government’s preparedness planning and said coordination with local administrations has been intensified. He added that the situation in Venezuela remains fluid and requires continued vigilance.
