Dutch Parliament Pressed on Long-Term Energy Strategy Involving Curaçao

Local | By Correspondent January 15, 2026

THE HAGUE – A set of parliamentary questions submitted by Forum for Democracy MP Peter van Duijvenvoorde has placed Curaçao at the center of a broader discussion about the Kingdom’s long-term energy and logistics strategy.

In his questions to the Dutch cabinet, Van Duijvenvoorde asks whether recent developments surrounding Venezuelan oil storage on Curaçao are being considered within a wider strategic vision for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. He wants to know whether the government is prepared to jointly explore, together with Curaçao, how these developments can be embedded in a coherent economic and geopolitical framework.

The MP specifically raises the issue of whether Curaçao can be structurally developed into an energy hub within the Kingdom, leveraging its oil storage capacity, port infrastructure and proximity to major shipping routes. He draws a parallel with the Netherlands’ own position as a logistics and energy gateway for Northwest Europe.

Van Duijvenvoorde also questions how the Dutch government intends to ensure that potential economic gains do not remain isolated but are connected to Dutch ports, logistics chains and knowledge institutions. According to him, stronger integration could help retain value, expertise and strategic influence within the Kingdom as a whole.

In addition, he asks the cabinet to clarify what concrete follow-up steps it envisions to actively seize these opportunities and within what timeframe Parliament can expect further updates. The questions suggest concern that, without a coordinated strategy, Curaçao’s role in evolving energy flows could remain ad hoc rather than becoming a sustainable pillar of economic development.

The Dutch government has not yet responded to the questions. Once answers are provided, they are expected to shed more light on how The Hague views Curaçao’s role amid shifting geopolitical and energy dynamics in the Caribbean region.
