Dutch soldiers help with security detained illegal Venezuelans awaiting deportation

Local | By Correspondent November 29, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - Dutch soldiers and military police are going to help in Curaçao to secure immigrants from Venezuela, who are awaiting their extradition. They are there because the SDKK prison is overcrowded. The Public Prosecution has submitted the application for so military assistance.

It means that the soldiers and military police are armed. 35 soldiers who are already stationed on the island will immediately be deployed for security 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They are used for checks and must prevent Venezuelans from escaping.

Recently immigration lawyers said that the island's government is collectively arresting Venezuelans. The rapid expulsion would be contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights.

The military aid from the Dutch side remains until all Venezuelans are deported. That can be quite fast, because as a rule Venezuelans are deported quickly.

According to the Minister of Justice, Quincy Girigorie, even though the borders of Venezuela are closed, there is still an agreement that the South American country will allow airlines to fly to and from the island to transport Venezuelans back to their country. Curaçao pays for this service.
