Education union: Papiamento as an elective subject is attack on Curaçao language

Local | By Correspondent June 3, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - President of education union SITEK Darius Plantijn finds the proposal of the Chamber of Commerce to no longer make Papiamento compulsory as a subject in secondary education very bad.

According to Plantin, this is an attack on the language of Curaçao. He also calls the timing of the proposal around the 50th anniversary of May 30 incomprehensible. He wants a clear answer to the proposal, both politically and by other authorities.

According to the union leader, Papiamento is an inseparable part of the country of Curaçao.
