Education union SITEK demands urgent talks over school safety

Local, | By Correspondent January 29, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Education union SITEK is calling for immediate consultations with the government over what it describes as a worsening security situation for teaching staff on Curaçao. The union warns that incidents of aggression and violence in schools are increasing and that current protections are insufficient.

In a letter addressed to the prime minister and the ministers of Justice and Education, SITEK has requested an urgent meeting, preferably the same day. According to the union, teachers and other education workers are facing intimidation, threats and violent behavior on an almost daily basis.

SITEK says the situation has become untenable and wants concrete agreements to be made during the proposed meeting. The union is pushing for immediate measures aimed at preventing incidents and improving safety on school grounds.

According to SITEK, the problem extends beyond the education sector alone. Violence in schools, the union argues, affects the broader community by undermining the learning environment and negatively impacting the development and well-being of students.

The union stresses that further delays are unacceptable and insists that safeguarding the safety of education personnel is a direct responsibility of the government.
