WILLEMSTAD - Today it is eight years ago that Helmin Magno Wiels was assassinated on the pier of Mariepampoen. The founder and leader of Pueblo Soberano was shot on May 5, 2013. The party, which is currently led by former Prime Minister Dr. Bernhard Whiteman, again this year reflected on the death of Wiels and mentions that he is still missed.
The party members also emphasize that there are still so many questions unanswered and that they continue to trust that the day the truth will be revealed.
Former minister George Jamaloodin was sentenced on appeal in March this year to the maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. The man who actually committed the murder, Elvis Kuwas, is serving a life sentence. "Murder broker" Burney Fonseca got 26 years. Two other people involved in the murder have died.
The motive for the murder has never become known, but there is said to be an argument between Wiels and Jamaloodin. It is also suspected that Wiels' fight against corruption and the gambling sector in Curaçao has cost him his life.
