Electricity service interruption: Islandwide blackout

Local | By Correspondent December 7, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - Like many on Curaçao, this media agency also experienced the annoying consequences of a total blackout. Since 08:00 this morning, all neighborhoods were confronted with an electricity service interruption as Aqualectra called it.

In the morning, Aqualectra announced that the blackout would last at least four to six hours. Eventually, it became at least eight to ten. From 4 pm onwards, the electricity slowly returned per neighborhood. The area where Curaçao Chronicle is located was one of the last neighborhoods to be connected again.

According to the director of Aqualectra Darick Jonis, COVID-1 was the reason for the blackout. Employees had been infected by the virus, which meant that maintenance would not be up to standard. As demand increased this morning, one 'plant' shut down and the entire island was shut down as a precautionary measure.

At 3 p.m., Jonis stated during a digital press conference that a start would be made to reduce the electricity per district. The first reports came in around 3.30 pm that some homes and offices had power again.
