Emotional Braam not satisfied with court's ruling

Local | By Correspondent February 8, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - Eduard Braam MP for the MFK party reacts emotionally to the decision that he should not be appointed as Minister of Justice because of a previous conviction. According to the MP, the ruling is incorrect. "I think they went into too much detail," Braam told the Dutch news site NU.cw.

The MP was asked last summer by formateur Gilmar Pisas to become Minister of Justice. In conversation with Governor Lucille George-Wout, Braam was told that he could not be appointed as a minister because of a previous conviction for a sex offense in 2002. In order to still qualify for the ministry, Braam filed a lawsuit against the Curaçao government.

The judge's verdict was clear. A minister cannot be convicted of a crime. The Court of First Instance saw no reason to rule otherwise in Braam's case. The politician is stunned by the sentence imposed on him by the Court. “My case is not a serious situation,” said Braam.

Yesterday was a busy day for Braam. "I respect the verdict, but I think they have been too keen on the details," said Braam. According to him, the judge worded the sexual acts in too much detail. He sees that as bullying. "That was irrelevant."

According to Braam, the truth will come out. “Maybe not now, but later.”
