WILLEMSTAD – The Project Team for Supervision and Enforcement (PTH) has temporarily halted construction activities in the Fuik area following reports of heavy machinery operating along the coastline near Fuik Bay.
According to the enforcement team, a notification was received on January 28, 2026, at approximately 6:17 p.m., indicating that excavation work was taking place close to the shoreline. Upon arrival at the site, inspectors spoke with the head of maintenance of Santa Barbara, who explained that a road running from Santa Barbara to a signpost in the area requires maintenance.

The maintenance official stated that rising sea levels and wave action had begun to damage the road surface. He further emphasized that no mangrove trees were being removed and that, on the contrary, efforts were being made to protect the mangroves in the area, with plans to plant additional mangrove trees.
According to the explanation provided, limited pruning of some mangrove trees may be necessary to allow vehicles to access the signpost. The official also indicated that the land in question is privately owned.
The Project Team for Supervision and Enforcement decided to suspend the works temporarily in order to consult with the relevant government authorities and determine whether a so-called aanlegvergunning (development permit) is required for the road repairs. The activities will remain on hold until there is clarity on the applicable permit requirements.
