WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao experienced an unusually explosive rise in relational violence in 2020. Police had to intervene 190 times because things went wrong between partners and spouses.
In 2019 this was 120 times. An increase of almost 60 percent. This is evident from the crime figures presented on Thursday.
168 times this resulted in an arrest. 117 men and 51 women were handcuffed.
The increase is visible in almost every month and has already started even before the Covid measures. But at the start of the lockdown in March, the number of cases doubled to 33. The following months until September are also sticking out.
