Extension of emergency regulation dependent on opposition

Local | By Correspondent February 19, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - The question is whether the state of emergency in Curaçao can be extended. The government must decide on this because the first state of emergency is only valid for 90 days.

The decision must be ratified by the parliament, but the government does not have a majority there. It needs at least one vote from the opposition.

The deadlock in parliament has arisen because the opposition refuses to provide a quorum, so that the vacant seat of the PAR can be filled.

According to some opposition MPs, they will not cooperate to extend the emergency regulation since in the beginning they already voted against it. They did not agree to give the government so much power to deal with the pandemic.
