Extra nurses for ICU department CMC

Local | By Correspondent January 5, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) is assisted by twelve intensive care nurses from abroad. The extra healthcare staff comes to the island via the American employment agency AMI.

The CMC sounded the alarm again on Tuesday. "The hospital has reached the ceiling of its capacity. The hospital cannot handle a new wave of corona infections," said general director Gilbert Martina. The shortage of specialized personnel is the main reason that the CMC is reaching its limits.

Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas stated during the press conference on Monday that the hospital would have sounded the alarm too late. "That is not correct. We immediately indicated that the shortage of personnel is a bottleneck and that there is no money to solve that problem," Martina contradicts.

The general manager continues to plead for stricter measures. “Because twelve intensive care nurses are just enough to care for three extra patients,” Martina indicated.
