WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao may have to deal with rising prices for eggs. According to distributors, there is a real 'egg crisis' coming due to problems in local production.
The price for a dozen eggs is currently at 4.88 guilders and could possibly rise to more than eleven guilders per box due to the crisis. The price for chicken feed and its transport has risen enormously in recent months. Because chicken farmers cannot pay the transport costs, fourteen containers are now fixed. The containers will be returned to the Netherlands on Wednesday if the amount is not paid.
If the chickens die of hunger, this can lead to a major egg shortage on Curaçao, said the importers. At the moment, about eighty to one hundred thousand eggs are consumed per day.
