Fewer traffic accidents in pandemic year

Local | By Correspondent April 19, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - The strict measures against COVID-19 have led to fewer accidents on Curaçao's roads last year. The number of car accidents fell from 13,031 in 2019 to 9,612 last year. A decrease of more than 25 percent.

This is evident from the statistics in the Forensys annual report. The figures fluctuate quite a bit and it is clear that the covid measures are the determining factor.

The sharp fall in the number of accidents started in March, the start of the corona pandemic. And especially in April, when Curaçao was completely under a lockdown, the number of accidents was historically low. By way of comparison: In 2019 there were 1,073 incidents in April, in 2020 there were "only" 248. After April, the number rose again in a fast-rising trend. But up to December, the number of accidents remained below 2019 levels.

In 2020, a total of 2,930 people were injured in a road collision. There were 16 deaths, one less than the year before.
