WILLEMSTAD - The fire at the Malpais landfill is under control. On Saturday afternoon it started when a large number of car tires were on fire. According to waste processing company Selikor, the fire was deliberately set.
The fire caused an enormous smoke development, which mainly affected residents south of the landfill. The fire brigade was quickly on site and received assistance from loaders who poured earth on the burning car tires.
Residents of Grote Berg, Daniel, Martha Koosje, Tera Kora and the surrounding area had to close windows and doors to keep the smoke out.
The landfill is open again.
