WILLEMSTAD - The first day of vaccination without an appointment was a great success. The government announced last Friday that 'walk in vaccination' would also be possible starting on Saturday.

The long lines at both the World Trade Center (WTC) and Sentro Deportivo Korsou (SDK) show that many people have responded to the call to get vaccinated without an appointment.

On Saturday, according to medical leader of the vaccination program Dr. Jerry Semper, 1,508 people had their first Moderna vaccination. The total number of vaccinated people continues to rise to 55,143 people. "If you take 125,000 people as a target, 44 percent have been vaccinated and 56 percent have already registered," Semper indicated.

When asked whether Semper thinks that Curaçao will achieve 85 percent to get group immunity, Semper says: "The World Health Organization has not yet determined an exact percentage for group immunity for this virus. 85% is a ‘safe’ assumption in the scientific world."

"However, we are not yet allowed to vaccinate people under the age of 18. The goal is therefore to vaccinate 85% of the those older than 18," said Semper. According to the doctor, the rest can then be vaccinated, but it is also known that young people under 18 do not really get sick. "The goal is now aimed at the group over 18 years old that we can and are allowed to vaccinate", Semper concludes.
