Fisherman rescued after falling into sea at Shete Boka

Local | By Correspondent February 6, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - A fisherman had a narrow escape on Tuesday morning at Shete Boka, where he fell into the sea and became trapped under a cliff, according to the Curaçao Police Force.

The incident unfolded at approximately 8:37 am when the police received a distress call reporting that three men were fishing at Shete Boka, one of whom had fallen into the sea. Shortly after the notification, additional information reached the police, revealing that the other two men quickly responded by lowering a rope into the water, intending to provide a means for the victim to hold on and be lifted back up.

In the process of hoisting the man out of the water, however, the rope unexpectedly broke, causing the fisherman to plunge back into the sea. Responding to the situation, both the fire department and the Coast Guard were mobilized. Fortunately, by the time they arrived, the other fishermen had successfully rescued the man, rendering additional assistance unnecessary.

According to the fisherman who fell into the water, the rough sea conditions led to a large wave sweeping him away, resulting in his fall into the sea.

This incident echoes a similar report from mid-December, where another fisherman fell into the sea at Shete Boka. Additionally, at the end of December, two men encountered difficulties at the nature park, raising concerns about safety in the area. It remains uncertain whether these incidents involve the same individuals. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of exercising caution and adhering to safety measures while engaging in activities along the coastline.
