Fisherman tragically swept away by wave during fishing expedition

Local | By Correspondent February 13, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - A somber incident occurred on Sunday morning as a fisherman met a tragic end while engaged in a fishing activity at 'Shut.' The individual, unfortunately, succumbed to the force of a powerful wave, rendering any rescue attempts futile, according to a report from the Caribbean Coast Guard.

The ill-fated fisherman, accompanied by a fellow angler, was casting lines on the north side when an unexpected large wave struck them. The victim found himself unable to extricate from the water independently, in stark contrast to the fortunate survival of his fishing companion.

The Curaçao Police Force reached out to the Maritime Operations Center (MOC) of the Coast Guard, seeking assistance in locating the distressed fisherman. The Caribbean Coast Guard promptly directed a helicopter from the MOC to 'Shut' to facilitate the retrieval operation.

Upon the helicopter's swift arrival at the scene, the lifeless body of the fisherman was carefully lifted from the water, with the police and fire department also present to coordinate efforts.

The helicopter conveyed the solemn cargo to the shore, where a medical professional confirmed the unfortunate demise of the fisherman. The coastal community mourns the loss of a life in the face of the unpredictable forces of nature.
