Fishermen back on Curaçao after 17 months

Local | By Correspondent September 13, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - The group of fishermen who had been detained in Venezuela for a year and a half finally arrived back in Curaçao on Saturday afternoon after the Kingdom government negotiated with the Venezuelan government for their release.

The group of fishermen took their boat to Venezuela last March to fish nearby and were captured and imprisoned in 'inhumane' conditions.

After an investigation by the Kingdom government and a reprimand against the Venezuelan government, the fishermen were released. This concerns three Curaçaoans, a Venezuelan and a Bonairean.

On that same day, the RST arrested 1 of the 5 fishermen immediately upon arrival in Curaçao. The police and the Public Prosecution Service did not want to comment on the arrest on Sunday. All they said was that the man is a suspect in a major drug case.
