WILLEMSTAD - About 8,000 Curaçao residents are currently on the waiting list for social housing. Arthur Con, chairman of Fundashon Kas Popular (FKP) announced this to the Members of Parliament.
On Thursday, Con indicated in parliament that more houses should be built for people who live below the subsistence level. FKP builds about a hundred homes a year, but this is not nearly enough. FKP would like to make use of vacant homes, but the government indicates that there is no more money for rent subsidy.
At the moment, more than 3,000 people are dependent on rent subsidy from FKP, which costs the government about 7 million guilders per month.
