WILLEMSTAD, THE HAGUE - The Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament wants foreigners in the prison barracks to receive better legal aid. A motion to that effect by Member of Parliament for the D66 party Antje Diertens was adopted yesterday.
Nowadays, most of them do not get that assistance, and if they do, it can be sometimes too late. Lawyers do not always have access to their clients. The Dutch House of Representatives believes that Curaçao thereby violates human rights.
Undersecretary Raymond Knops of Kingdom Relations sees nothing in the implementation of this motion, because that is only possible if Curaçao asks for it. Detention of aliens is an autonomous matter, according to Knops.
