Former President Central Bank negative about austerity measures government Rhuggenaath

Local | By Correspondent March 20, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - Former president of the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten Emsley Tromp does not have a good word for the package of measures presented by the government of Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath and his Minister of Finance Kenneth Gijsbertha.

According to Tromp, the announced cuts primarily affect purchasing power. He argues that in the event of continued shrinkage, it is very unwise to increase direct or indirect taxes, such as sales tax. That is exactly what Finance Minister Kenneth Gijsbertha will be doing.

Tromp believes that it is detrimental to economic activity and therefore does not solve the problem of public finances. According to him, the government needs to work on reactivating the economy.
