Four months before closing of voter register, electoral council still incomplete

Local | By Correspondent August 14, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - With just over four months remaining before the voter register closes for the March 21 elections next year, the Konseho Supremo Elektoral (KSE) is still not fully constituted. According to the law, the electoral council must consist of seven members, but so far, only three members have been appointed. The appointment of the remaining four members is still pending, while preparations for the elections are already underway.

Before the Ministry of Governance, Planning, and Public Services can formalize the appointments, the nomination committee must select a candidate from the applicants. Following this, SBTNO must provide advice, and the candidate must undergo a security screening. Finally, the Director of the Curaçao Security Service must issue a clearance certificate.

The voter register closes on December 24, a critical date as it marks the end of the period during which citizens can register to vote in the upcoming elections. After this deadline, no changes can be made to the register, and only those correctly registered at that time will be eligible to vote. This step is crucial in the election process to ensure the final list of eligible voters is accurate.

The submission of candidate lists for political parties or independent candidates wishing to participate in the elections will take place a month later, on January 23, at the office of the Konseho Supremo Elektoral on Scharlooweg 11.

Support for the lists of parties not currently represented in parliament will occur on February 1 and 2. These parties must collect at least 848 signatures.
