Government and CMC to remediate Curaçao's hospital

Local | By Correspondent October 28, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The government and the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) have drawn up a plan to remediate the debts of the new hospital. This so-called outline agreement contains fourteen themes and is based on the report of the Dutch Healthcare Authority NZa, which investigated the functioning of the CMC in Curaçao.

Twelve experts have been appointed to a steering group. They are analyzing the findings of the NZa report and will present an action plan based on this soon.

After that, the Public Health Inspectorate will investigate the waiting lists for non-acute care and the CMC itself must ensure the rapid production of the 2019 and 2020 annual accounts.

It must also be made clear who is responsible for the costs of care for uninsured people, such as people without a residence permit. The collaboration with the Analytical Diagnostic Center ADC must also continue, although the agreement must be reconsidered.

This steering group includes people from the HNO foundation, the Ministry of Health, the National Reform Commission, the Social Insurance Bank (SVB), the Curaçao healthcare authority that is still being established and the Ministry of Traffic and Transport.

The CMC will have a debt of 200 million by the end of this year if no action is taken. The operating loss is over 50 million guilders per year, which amounts to a loss of 1 million guilders per week. During the press conference, it was said that in any case the rent of the hospital complex is too high.
