WILLEMSTAD - The plans for the restoration of the Waterfort arches will be worked out in the coming months. This is reported by the General Pension Fund Curaçao (APC).

The Ministry of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning (VVRP), the Monument Care Foundation, the Monument Fund Foundation and the APC signed the Letter of Intent on June 9. In the coming months they want to work together on restoration, management, maintenance, and exploitation of the water fort arches in Punda.

"The monumental water fort arches are an integral part of the redevelopment of the Plaza area. These arches are important historical heritage and property of the Land. When APC bought the Plaza hotel at the auction in 2020, the government already had the desire to transfer the exploitation of the water fort arches to the future owner," according to APC.

According to APC, the parties jointly aim to preserve the monumental heritage by drawing up a feasible plan for the restoration, renovation, sustainable management and exploitation of the water fort arches. Signing the LoI is part of the initiative phase in which APC and partner Heritage Plaza Consortium (HPC) are currently in.

Not only will the various parts of the plan be tested for feasibility, but the plan of approach also takes into account a broadly supported development of the arches. The team will consult with relevant stakeholders and involve experts in this process.

"The Ministry of VVRP, the Monument Care Foundation, the Monument Fund Foundation and the APC are convinced that with this initiative and the total development of the former Plaza Hotel, the city center of Punda will get a real revival," says the APC.
