WILLEMSTAD - Jerry Semper, chairman of the Curaçao GP Association (CHV) has sent a press release to warn people about the extreme heat. He explains in the press release that he receives many concerned signals from people about the extreme heat. GPs indicate that they do not yet see an increase in patients who have become ill due to the heat. Semper wants to inform people about the possible consequences of the heat, that the symptoms are recognized and how people should act.
Extreme heat has negative consequences for the health of elderly people, the chronically ill or overweight people. Children are also at high risk. They depend on adults. Parents should take precautions for their children.
There are several symptoms by which people can recognize overheating, namely fatigue, difficulty concentrating, headaches, dizziness, temperature rise, swollen ankles and skin irritation. In extreme cases, a patient develops symptoms such as a fast heart rhythm, cramping, pale skin, sweating or fainting.
In an excessive case, a patient can die from extreme heat. If such a symptom is observed, move to a cool place or room with air conditioning or take a cold shower as soon as possible. The doctor then recommends drinking water in small amounts. "If this doesn't improve the situation, call the doctor," Semper said. He advises people to spend a short time in the sun and to drink plenty of water, even if one is not thirsty.
