Growing Calls for Equal Security Treatment Within the Kingdom

Local | By Correspondent December 15, 2025

THE HAGUE – A recurring theme in the parliamentary debate was the call for equal security treatment of the Caribbean and European parts of the Kingdom, as MPs questioned whether the ABC-islands receive the same level of strategic consideration as the Netherlands.

Several lawmakers pointed out that while the Caribbean territories are constitutionally equal partners within the Kingdom, they are often excluded from high-level security discussions and intelligence briefings. This gap, MPs argued, becomes more problematic as regional tensions intensify.

Although the government maintained that existing structures comply with constitutional arrangements, MPs insisted that evolving geopolitical realities demand a reassessment of how security information is shared.

Calls were made for stronger involvement of Caribbean parliaments in discussions on defense, crisis management and regional stability. While no immediate changes were announced, the issue is expected to return in future debates.

For Curaçao, the discussion reflects a broader concern: being close enough to feel the impact of international conflict, yet distant from the decision-making tables where responses are shaped.
