WILLEMSTAD - There is hardly any cooperation between veterinaries in Curacao. This should be especially the case with virus outbreaks, according to veterinarian Lyndon Comenencia.
He blames the lack of cooperation, as he calls it, "broodnijd" (professional jealousy). Competition between vets is strong, says Comenencia.
In the Netherlands there was the outbreak of the incurable brucellosis disease among dogs.
This has not yet been detected in Curacao, but there is a good chance that the disease will also occur in Curacao. More cooperation between veterinarians could limit an outbreak. Comencia also calls for the Veterinary Service to act in such cases.
The chance that brucellosis passes from dogs to human is not likely, but the disease spreads quickly among dogs. This is mainly done through reproduction.
