WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s newly appointed Minister of Health, Environment and Nature, Tyron Boekhoudt, has announced that he will immediately focus on disease prevention, reducing healthcare waiting lists, and strengthening primary care services across the island.

Boekhoudt made his policy intentions clear during his first official working visit to the Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature. According to the minister, these three areas will form the cornerstone of his initial policy agenda within the healthcare sector.

He stressed that urgent action is needed to implement measures aimed at preventing illness, shortening waiting times for medical treatment, and improving access to basic healthcare services. Strengthening first-line care, the minister noted, is essential to ensuring that patients receive timely and effective support before more complex medical interventions become necessary.

In addition, Boekhoudt announced that before the end of the month he plans to visit several healthcare institutions on the island. These visits are intended to give him a clearer picture of existing bottlenecks within the sector and to help determine which issues require the most immediate attention from the government.

The minister emphasized that close engagement with healthcare providers will be key in shaping effective and realistic policies as he begins his term.
